Nestled in a residential neighbourhood in Whitefield, Columbia Asia Hospital is an urban regeneration project. An existing shopping mall was repurposed to accommodate a hospital. The biggest challenge that the designers faced during the conception of the design was repurposing the internal and external spaces to accommodate the needs of a hospital. As there are multiple services involved in the functioning of the hospital like electrical, plumbing, HVAC, interior, etc., the need for good coordination between different teams was essential in the execution of the project. The use of BIM process helped in the integration of the different aspects of construction making the management of such a large scale project much simpler and efficient. The existing structure was efficiently used without much demolition and additions to create a hospital that offers multiple speciality services to patients. Like every hospital, utmost importance was given to hassle free movement to provide easy and convenient access to visitors. Apart from this, the aim was to create a pleasant and calm environment for both in patients and out patients. A tranquil colour palette of blue and white is used throughout the hospital along with splashes of bright colours in the lounge to make it more welcoming to the visitors. It is also in tune with the colour theme of the hospital.
The use of BIM was of great help in creating a wholesome design along with easing the coordination of different individuals who worked on the project. The vision to create a design that matched global standards and the reputation of this preferred chain of hospitals was made a reality with team work and careful understanding and planning.
